Achieve Greater Success with an Ownership Mindset

Most people want advanced opportunities in life, but they get stuck among the masses of employees and can’t see how to achieve more. But to have opportunity, growth, and abundance you must always think and act as if you are the owner of your company.

Do you have to be the actual legal owner in your business, with your name on the front door?   Absolutely not. Even if you are just an employee, an owner’s mindset can take you further in your career. You can be the owner of the business in your own mind. 

Your mind is the most powerful tool you will ever possess. It can create as much success and prosperity or as much failure and poverty as you can imagine. And the situation your mind creates is completely your choice. If you decide to, you can completely transform your mindset from one of employee to one of ownership. With an owner’s mindset, the level of success you can achieve is limitless.

The Employee Mentality vs. the Ownership Mentality

Employees typically take assignments and complete them without a thought as to how their personal efforts impact the success of the business. Employees also concentrate on the status quo in the workplace. They don’t rock the boat, and they exert just enough effort and energy to get by. 

Owners, on the other hand, enthusiastically give the extra effort and choose to do things to attract more business, clients, and profits. Owners see the big picture and know the work they do is making a meaningful contribution to the company’s advancement. Owners also concentrate on developing new, positive solutions to current operation. They think outside the box; they take risks and become problem-solvers.

When you develop an ownership mindset, you will see significant changes in your business and work habits. You’ll have more pride in what you do, because the success of your company reflects on you personally. You won’t waste the company’s resources, and when the company profits you will profit also. And because you want only the best for your business and yourself, making decisions is a breeze. An owner mindset also boosts your and your co-workers’ morale. You’ll feel freer and happier because as an owner, there are no “have-tos,” only “choose-tos.” 

You’ll be in big demand. If you think and act like an owner, you can never really be fired. You may actually experience a layoff, but other companies will jump at the opportunity to bring aboard a team member with an owner’s mindset. 

If you are happy, content and choose to stay in your current position, an employee mentality is just fine. But if you are serious about rising to the top of your profession and achieving amazing success, you must shift to an owner mindset. 

How to Develop an Ownership Mindset

Creating an ownership mindset is up to you. The process will be as easy or as difficult as you choose to make it. The more time you dedicate to realizing a new vision for yourself, the more rapidly it will manifest results in your life. If you want to develop an ownership mindset, use the following three techniques:

1. Visualization 

To develop your ownership mindset, you must start visualizing yourself as an owner. Your subconscious does not know true from false. Therefore, it will accept what you tell it and react to how you act.

In your mind, change the sign on company door to read your name, i.e. “Jack Perry Inc.” If can you see your name on the door in your mind’s eye, you will begin to really feel that the company is yours. Every morning, when you approach that door, see your name on it. Stop and look at it for a little while. Quickly, you’ll notice your mindset beginning to change! 

2. Think  

On the job, you may become used to solving problems and addressing challenges without really thinking twice about what you’re doing. But taking a moment to think things through can actually open new doors for success.

Every day as you encounter challenges, a.k.a. opportunities, ask yourself, “What would an owner do in this situation?” Usually, the answer to what an owner would do is obvious. When you have the answer you will know the right thing to do. But don’t fall prey to the course of least resistance. If the owner’s answer requires extra effort, work, and sacrifice, then do it. Remember, if you know the right way to do something in life and you don’t do it, you have only yourself to blame for lost ground.

3. Actualize

This step requires you to take action to change from an employee to an ownership mindset (Note that the first part of the word “actualize” is the word “act”). Owners approach work differently than employees. And if you want an ownership mindset, you need to act like an owner. The following four actions will display your desire for greater success to everyone in your organization:

Be the first to arrive. Many employees arrive to the office late. So you arrive early.

Be the last to leave. Many employees leave early from work. Don’t slip out early with the rest of the crowd.

Keep a big smile on your face. Many employees are negative. Your smile and positive attitude will make you stand out.

Ask for more work. Many people never volunteer for more work than they already have. When you have spare time, ask others how you can help them.

Owners arrive early, stay late, have a positive can-do attitude, and constantly search for jobs that need to be done. Start using these techniques today and you’ll see changes happen very quickly. 

Ownership is All in Your Mind

You have the choice to stand as an employee or rise to a higher level with an owner’s mindset. This change alone can bring unlimited opportunities and increased personal satisfaction. And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being an employee, when you have an owner’s mindset, your success is limitless. So if you want to achieve greater success, make the decision today, right now, to think and act like an owner and you will most assuredly rise to the top.
